Well that didn’t last long. The quark draws its name from the book Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce. Originally, it was going to be spelled kwork. Gell-Mann, the discoverer of the quark, decided on the current spelling because the quote goes “Three quarks for Muster Mark”, and quarks always appear in threes
